Project Spotlight – Fish River Ranger Accommodation, NT
Stan Bond’s success is often based on our ability to design and manufacture bespoke solutions to difficult problems. In partnership with UniSA’s Design Construct program, Stan Bond’s commercial team recently developed an innovative solution for Ranger Accommodation using Crimsafe screens as walls around a remote structure in Fish River, Northern Territory.
The approach was so successful that the Fish River Ranger Accommodation has won a number of awards including the National Security Screen Association’s Best Commercial Installation Award for 2019.
Fish River is a part of the national reserve system which protects native plans and animals for future generations. It employes aboriginal rangers from the Daly River community and is a meeting place for the original inhabitants.
The project which started in 2016 was to design and construct upgrades to existing accommodation at the Fish River Station in the Northern Territory. The station had a number of accommodation structures which were as simple as a floor and roof with no walls.
Stan Bond was contacted by the University of South Australia Design Construct program leaders to develop walls that could help address the extreme climatic conditions making a more comfortable space for people to stay.
An innovative approach was taken with Crimsafe screens wrapping the whole building meaning that there are no solid walls or glazing around the building. This allowed airflow, some daytime privacy and afforded protection against insects and other animals. By using Crimsafe 304 Stainless Steel mesh we were able to create long-lasting protection with limited maintenance.
Installation was undertaken in partnership with UniSA students to provide a hands-on learning experience. Since installation, feedback from the Rangers has confirmed the design achieved their desired outcomes for increased comfort, privacy and safety.
Earlier in the year, UniSA Design Construct was also awarded the Australian Institue of Architects NT Chapter Yali-McNamara Award for Small Project Architecture and the Indigenous Community Architecture Award. More recently, the team at Stan Bond is proud to be awarded NSSA Best Commercial Installation award as part of the ongoing success of the project.
