The Stan Bond Guide to Cleaning Internal Blinds
Cleaning is rarely fun, but cleaning internal blinds seems to draw more than its fair share of ire when it comes to keeping them looking good.
So, we’ve pooled our more than 40 years’ knowledge and expertise to bring you a guide to cleaning internal blinds.
Cleaning Fabric Blinds
Fabric is a popular choice for Roman Blinds, Roller Blinds, Panel Blinds and Honeycomb Cellular Blinds – all of which can be cleaned easily:
- Keep dust at bay by blowing the dust away with your hairdryer on a cool setting (this is especially handy to clear any dirt trapped in creases or inside Honeycomb Cellular Blinds).
- Use your vacuum’s dust brush attachment, on a low setting, and run it over the length of the blind.
- Rather than risk smudging bug bodies all over your blinds, clear them out with a shot from your hairdryer.
- Treat stains on fabric blinds with warm soapy water – gently blot the area to be treated without saturating the fabric. Allow the fabric to dry and repeat if necessary. Seek advice from a professional clean for stubborn stains.
Aluminium Venetian Blinds
Dust them first, and then wash them with a soft cloth. But, if you’ve got a few Aluminum Venetian Blinds in your home, save yourself some time by recruiting your bathtub.
First, decide whether or not to clean your blinds in batches, or just one at a time using these instructions:
- Fill your tub with warm soapy water – a mild dishwashing soap is fine.
- Let the blind soak for a few minutes then gently rub both sides of the slats with a soft brush, sponge, or mop
- Drain the dirty water and refill the tub with clean water to rinse. Make sure no soapsuds are left on the blinds as they’ll cause spotting.
- Lay the wet blinds on top of bath towels to soak up the excess water and then hang them back up to dry completely.
- Consider using a dusting spray to discourage dust from settling on them.
- If you have a spa bath (lucky you), let the jets do the scrubbing for you.
Alternatively, use the sun to your advantage:
- Lay your Aluminium Venetian Blinds on the grass and squirt a small amount of mild soap on them.
- Spray with your garden hose, flip and repeat.
- Use a soft brush or cloth if needed.
- Rinse thoroughly and either hang them on the clothesline or leave them in the sun to dry.
Timber Venetians
Most, but not all, Timber Venetian Blinds are treated with a finish designed to repel dirt and stains. Regardless, you can clean Timber Venetians with a quality furniture polish and a soft cloth.
Spray the furniture polish on the cloth and wipe each slat individually – avoiding the cords as you go.
If you prefer, you can use water, but don’t saturate the wood. Keep a dry cloth handy and immediately wipe the slat to prevent water spotting or warping.
Vertical Blinds
Vertical Blinds are one of the easiest to clean. Regularly run a lint roller – like the one you use to remove fluff from your clothes – over your blinds to remove dust, cobwebs and fluff.
