How to Keep Your Home Secure While You’re Away

Going away over summer and looking to improve your home security? Well, if you’re looking to do it, the time is now.

Statistically speaking, summer is the busiest time of the year for Australian burglars. As a large majority of people go away or spend less time in their homes, burglars seize the opportunity for hot property.

But, there are a number of measures you can take to secure your home.

1. Lock your doors

This might seem obvious, but you’d be surprised how many people don’t do this. The Australian police suggest that this is the most common mode of entry for thieves.

Speak to your local locksmith about getting door and window locks. Or come and see us at Stan Bond for advice on home security.

2. Don’t advertise you’re away

Make your house look like it’s occupied.

Install automatic light timers in and outside your house, and have them patterned to give the illusion someone is in the property.

Arrange to have your lawn cut, your mail picked up and your rubbish bins put out while you’re away.

3. Improve defences

ABS research suggests that 60% of victims cited a door or window as damaged when broken in to. Security screens and doors, like our Crimsafe range, are a great deterrent to would-be burglars. Also, think about installing deadlocks, roller blinds and shutters.

We’ve also got a broad range of Diamond Security Grilles that prevent burglars from breaking through the door or window.

4. Don’t provide cover

Don’t give thieves a chance to hide.

A burglar is much more likely to try and get into a house where there is less chance of being seen.

Cut back trees and shrubs near windows, and install motion and security lights.

5. Monitor all targets

Make sure your shed and garage are properly locked. These are often targets for thieves who use your tools to gain easy access to your home.

6. Store valuables in a safe

Money and jewellery are the most commonly stolen items. Installing a small safe in your home is a low-cost way of ensuring their protection.

7. Install a home alarm for added security

Add another layer to your home’s defence by installing an alarm system. This way neighbours and passers-by will be notified if there’s a disturbance.

8. Keep a digital copy of your possessions

By keeping a digital record of your valuables you’re much more likely to be able to provide correct information to police and your insurance company.

9. Make yourself acquainted with your neighbours

The best home security is from neighbours who look out for one another. By making a point of meeting and becoming social with them, you can trust they’ll keep a look out for you and report any suspicious activity.

It is so rare these days that a company offers such wonderful service and quality of product. From the very start to the very end, nothing short of pure excellence. Jenny was amazing with her suggestions and ideas, her patience very much appreciated and her ability to get the job done within limited timescales very much appreciated. This is my second experience with this company, internal shutters and curtains to go to complete my home and I will not even bother to get quotes elsewhere. Thank you Jenny, and all the team at Stan Bond - don't ever close your doors please!

We found Stan Bond to have really friendly, knowledgeable staff, they were reasonably priced, had fast turnaround and the installer was efficient and cleaned up after himself and was of minimal disruption to our office staff who were all working throughout the installation process. Very happy with the service, we would definitely use again.
