Solar-control window films can reduce solar heat gain and glare while retaining daylight. Appearance and performance vary by film and glass, so compare a current sample and the datasheet for the exact product proposed.

Have the installer assess glass type, coatings, condition, shading and thermal-stress compatibility before installation, including double- or triple-glazed units. Solar-control film does not automatically provide the winter insulation properties of low-e film.

Reduced internal reflection can improve views out, but it does not guarantee privacy. When the room is brighter than outside at night, people may be able to see in. Use an appropriate blind or curtain where night-time privacy is required.

Popular film: 3M Prestige Series

The 3M Prestige Series Film is simply amazing technology. With several versions available – including Prestige 70, which is almost optically clear, and Prestige 40, which is tinted – the films provide heat rejection of up to approximately 60% (around 50% for Prestige 70 and 60% for Prestige 40 on single clear glass) with no additional internal reflection. Customers love the ability to maintain more natural light in their homes while reducing cooling costs and blocking the sun’s rays. This is a popular option in window film. Many customers report significant savings on their energy bill, as these films help lower energy costs and enhance overall comfort and energy efficiency.

What’s new: low-e window film

Some low-e window films are designed to reduce heat loss as well as solar heat gain. These properties do not apply to every solar-control film. Ask which current product is suitable for your glass and whether its balance of summer and winter performance fits your room.

The 3M Prestige Series uses non-metallized, multi-layer optical film and nano-technology to prevent up to 97% of the sun’s infrared light as well as 60% of heat and 99% of ultraviolet rays coming through windows. 3M Prestige Window Films are designed to keep your home cool, comfortable and protected – without compromising natural light and views. Prestige Window Films are clear to lightly tinted, and will allow up to 70% of visible light through your windows.

Night Vision Series

Night Vision films are designed to reduce internal reflections and improve views out compared with more reflective films. Privacy depends on lighting on each side of the glass; when the interior is brighter at night, people outside may be able to see in. Use an appropriate blind or curtain where night-time privacy is required. Ask for performance data for the exact film and glass.

Traditional Series

3M Traditional Series Window Films possess a thin adhesive as well as a micro-metal coating. This allows the films to reflect infrared solar radiation, reducing the amount of heat being transferred through the window. The 3M Traditional Window Films work to reduce glare and ultraviolet damage and offer different levels of privacy, depending on the film chosen.

Stan Bond does not recommend traditional metal sputtered films in many situations, as they are less clear, corrode near sea conditions and can reduce the effectiveness of wireless internet and mobile signal.

Ceramic Series

The Ceramic Series Window Films utilise nano-ceramic technology to reject up to 80% of the sun’s infrared light, 59% of the heat and 99% of the ultraviolet rays coming through windows. 3M Ceramic Window Films are moderately tinted and provide additional glare reduction, while allowing up to 50% of visible light transmission.

The 3M Ceramic Series delivers stellar performance against solar heat and sunlight. The spectrally selective films reject up to 80% of the sun’s infrared light to reduce energy costs, while blocking more than 99% of the sun’s harmful ultra-violet (UV) rays, which reduces the fading of fabrics.
