Knowledge HubOutdoor Blinds
Adelaide heat makes window orientation, outside shade and daily use important when choosing blinds. Start with where direct sun reaches the glass and which rooms become uncomfortable.
Shade the glass from outside
External blinds and awnings can intercept sunlight before it reaches the window. Compare canvas, acrylic and mesh for the view, airflow and shade you need. Performance depends on the fabric, glazing, size, fixing and exposure; a shade or UV percentage is not the same as a whole-window solar heat-gain reduction.
Auto Guide awnings can suit accessible windows. Ziptrak outdoor blinds and Zipscreen can suit other openings after a site assessment. Side tracks guide the fabric; they should not be assumed to form an airtight seal. Follow the selected system’s wind and weather instructions.
Manage heat and light indoors
Honeycomb blinds use cellular pockets to help limit heat transfer at the window. Curtains and close-fitting blinds can also help, especially with appropriate coverage and a pelmet. Actual comfort and energy effects depend on fitting, glazing, the home and how the coverings are used.
Choose light filtering where daylight matters, and consider a separate opaque layer where night-time privacy or room darkening is needed. Blockout fabric does not remove all light around the edges of an installed blind.
For glass you can’t shade from outside, compare heat control window film.
Compare options for your room
- Which direction does the window face, and when does direct sun reach it?
- Can exterior shading be fitted and operated safely?
- How much view, daylight and ventilation do you want to retain?
- Do you need privacy after dark or room darkening for sleeping?
- What space is available for tracks, brackets, stack-back and handles?
The Australian Government’s window guidance explains external shading, close-fitting coverings and light-coloured blockout backing. Open windows for evening cooling only when the outside air is cooler and conditions are suitable.
