Outdoor blinds or awnings: put the shade where you need it

Knowledge Hub

An outdoor blind generally screens a vertical opening. An awning can shade a window or project out over an area. Before comparing brands or fabrics, decide where the sun or weather is entering and where you need shade to fall.

“Canvas awning” is not one mechanism. Auto-guide, pivot-arm and folding-arm awnings have different shapes and uses. Comparing all of them with a Ziptrak blind as if they do the same job can lead to the wrong choice.

Three different shading jobs

Situation Options to discuss What needs checking
Sun on a house window Window awnings such as auto-guide or pivot-arm designs Window operation, fixing surface, projection and access
An open side of a verandah or alfresco Guided outdoor blinds such as Ziptrak or Zipscreen Supporting structure, opening size, floor and exposure
Shade over an uncovered seating area A folding-arm awning Mounting structure, projection, clearance and weather instructions

These are starting points for a site assessment, not a guarantee of suitability.

Guided outdoor blinds: shade across an opening

Ziptrak and Zipscreen retain fabric in side guides. They can screen the edge of an existing covered area while allowing it to be opened again when conditions suit.

Consider the view, walking access and what happens at the bottom of the blind. A sloping floor, uneven paving or an exposed corner needs a specific solution. Choose mesh or PVC according to the outcome you want, rather than assuming either will make the space a weatherproof room.

Window awnings: shade at the glass

An auto-guide awning and other window-awning designs can place shade outside a window. The useful shape depends on the opening, the path of the sun and how the window operates.

For a west-facing room, look at the low afternoon sun as well as midday conditions. Explain which part of the room becomes uncomfortable and when. A photograph taken only in the morning may miss the problem you are trying to solve.

Folding-arm awnings: overhead shade

A folding-arm awning projects from its mounting position to shade space below, then retracts when not in use. That is a different job from screening the side of a verandah.

Discuss suitable fixing support, headroom, projection and where the shade will fall as the sun moves. It is not a permanent roof. Ask for the weather and operating instructions for the exact awning rather than assuming a sensor or motor makes it safe to leave extended unattended.

Can different products work together?

Yes, where the site supports them. A house might need window awnings for exposed glass and guided blinds around a covered entertaining area. Treat each opening as a separate design decision before matching colours and controls.

Do not let matching appearances override safe access or suitable fixings. Doors must still open, people need clear passage and the products need room to operate.

What changes the cost?

Dimensions, fabric, controls, cassette or pelmet treatment, supporting work and access all affect the quote. Motorisation can introduce electrical or control requirements. Ask for like-for-like inclusions and a clear description of any work that is outside the quote.

Bring these details to the discussion

  1. Photos of the whole opening, including the roof or wall above it.
  2. The time of day when glare or heat is worst.
  3. Whether the main aim is window shade, privacy, shelter or overhead cover.
  4. Any doors, handles, plants or furniture near the proposed blind.
  5. Planned building, electrical or paving work.

Frequently asked questions

Can an outdoor blind replace a roof?

No. A vertical blind and an overhead cover perform different jobs. If rain enters from above, adding a blind across the side does not solve that by itself.

Are motorised products suitable for every opening?

No. The motor must suit the product, load, exposure and control arrangement. Read our motorisation power guide and discuss the exact system.

Can I use an existing post or fascia for fixing?

It needs assessment. A surface that looks convenient may not provide suitable support. Do not choose the product dimensions before checking the fixing arrangement.
